Gulf State Park Is Seeking Work Campers For Several Positions In Alabama

Gulf State park boasts over 6,180 acres of diverse natural habitat with  2.5 miles of sugar sandy white beach. Each year the park hosts 2 million visitors from all around the world. Within Gulf State Park we have 496 RV campsites with full hookups, 11 primitive campsites, 3 back Country Trail sites, 31 cabins and cottages, the Hugh Branyon Backcountry Trail which is 24 miles of paved hiking and biking trails and an 18 hole golf course. As a volunteer you will be accommodated with a campsite at no charge to you as long as you maintain 32 hours per work week which can be split between you and a spouse. During the winter months we have limited cabins available for volunteers working on special projects that can stay for free. Campground greeter: Volunteer will assist campground attendants. Duties will be to watch the gate entering the campground, accept money for campground entrance fee and give out daily passes. (Will be outdoors) Campground front office: Volunteer will assist campground attendants in checking people into their campsite and, if need be, cabin or cottage. Experience with computers is a plus. Campground maintenance: Volunteer will assist maintenance with mowing, weedeating, painting and basic maintenance needs. (Will be outdoors) Landscaping/ grounds keeping for campground: Volunteer will assist only with grounds keeping. (Will be outdoors) Golf course maintenance: Volunteer will assist golf course maintenance with general grounds keeping as well as maintenance issues.  (Will be outdoors) The Grill at the golf course: Volunteer will learn how to use the Posi-touch system and charge customers for food and drinks, assist with cooking and cleaning if necessary. General park maintenance: Volunteer will assist our head od maintenance with issues with our cabins and cottages. Painting and carpentry are a priority. Electrical experience is a plus. (Will be outdoors) Reservations/ Front desk: Volunteer will help at Headquarters helping guests, answering phones and taking reservations. Computer skills a plus.  Pier maintenance and pierhouse worker: Volunteer will assist pier house with guests, making food and drinks, working the window, and cleaning if needed. Maintenance will help with any repairs on the pier, collecting trash if needed also. (Will be outdoors) Beach ambassadors: Volunteer will help patrol the beach and help down at Alabama point. There are four ways you can show your support for DeSoto State Park: 1. Become a part-time volunteer in one of our facilities such as the Lodge, Country Store, Civilian Conservation Corps Museum or Nature Center. 2. Serve as a Camp Host in the Improved Campground. 3. Serve as a Work Camper in the park. 4. Work on a special project. PART-TIME VOLUNTEERS (Scheduled around your time) Part-time volunteers work in one of our facilities assisting our staff. Tasks may include: providing information and directions, taking campground & lodging reservations, answering the phone, helping with events, programs & hikes, trail maintenance, landscaping duties, or light housekeeping. CAMP HOSTS (One Month at a time) *When an Opening is Available Volunteer Camp Hosts act as our campground ambassadors. Camp Hosts receive a full hookup campsite in exchange for 20 + hours of service each week. Some duties may include: campground occupancy checks, light maintenance & cleaning, making copies, helping with events & programs, providing information & directions and assisting park staff in the Lodge, Country Store, Nature Center, or CCC Museum. Duties can vary. WORK CAMPERS (1 to 3 months at a time) *When an Opening is Available Volunteer Work Campers receive a full hookup campsite in exchange for 20 + hours of service each week. A position will typically range from 1 to 3 months at a time. Some duties may include: maintenance & cleaning, painting, mowing, weed-eating, landscaping, monitoring trails, picking up trash, pressure washing, etc. Duties can vary. SPECIAL PROJECTS (Scheduled Around Your Time) DeSoto State Park has over 30 miles of trails. Year-round maintenance is necessary to keep the trails in good condition. Some projects may include: keeping trails marked & legible, clearing new trails, repairing footbridges, erosion control, or brush trimming. This park is a US Army Corps of Engineers park and is staffed with two volunteer park host positions. Each position comes with a RV pad, free utilities, free uniform (cap and vest), and free laundry machine usage. Note: there is no internet coverage but a telephone is provided with park number that hosts answer. Cell phone coverage can be spotty at times. Couples applying should be in good health as medical services are over an hour away. Applicants should expect extreme summer time temperatures. This is a remote park with limited facilities. The closest Walmart and grocery stores are an hour away. Position runs through September with an option to extend over the winter. The park consists of a Restroom, large picnic pavilion, several primitive campsites, picnic sites and a boat ramp. Park host duties are to provide security, boat ramp fee and campground fee monitoring. Sumter Park is a sportsman’s paradise offering excellent fishing and hunting opportunities in the park. We are located in the beautiful area of Lookout mountain. there are hiking trails, waterfalls, amazing views and caves everywhere! Our campgrounds are exceptionally nice and we are interested in having a few RV'ers come and hookup their water and power in exchange for some help here.
