Panhandle Pioneer Settlement In Florida
Is Seeking Work Campers
Panhandle Pioneer Settlement brings together the material history of life between 1840
and the beginning of World War II. The mission is to acquire, document, research, and restore
buildings and tools that were used in daily life. The settlement is arranged to simulate an
agricultural community and serve the public as a rural living history museum. The settlement is
located in Blountstown Florida, a rural community in the Florida panhandle (Calhoun County) about
halfway between Panama City and Tallahassee.
PPS relies heavily on volunteers. There are five FHU 50/35 amp
campsites for full-time work campers. In addition, work campers have use of a laundry facility and
three sites have access to the internet through the settlement's wi-fi network.
Work camper duties vary. PPS asks for ten hours per week per person, but
work campers are expected to participate fully in the setup, conduct, and cleanup involved with the
community events held at the settlement. Please check out www.panhandlepioneer.org/events.htm for
all our events that we have throughout the year. Some tasks are regular, routine, and
continuing, such as, gift shop/storekeeper, tour guide, and grounds maintenance. Other
maintenance includes painting, cleaning, and repairing of the 18 building that have been moved to the
settlement. These buildings can be dated back to 1820. They are usually in need of some
kind of maintenance. There is numerous donated antique tools, machinery, etc. that is always in
need of upkeep, restoration and display.
We have a country store/gift shop that is our gift shop and is staffed by
our work campers/local volunteers, there are tours of the settlement for the visitors and should a work
camper wish they would be trained to give these tours (this is not a requirement should you not feel
comfortable doing so), and our events are enjoyable and educational.
Should you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with a walk back in time we would
love to have you as a work camper. We do not necessarily have a specific time limit for our work
campers, should you choose to stay a couple of months or as long as a year, we are open to all
possibilities. For a look at our facilities go to www.panhandlepioneer.org/.

These camps are for the most part in a remote part of the woods, and you
would be out there by yourselves. You would basically be ‘running’ the camps for us. We do have
rangers come in and do garbage pick up resupply etc. We stay in contact with our hosts all the time – and
you can call us any time you need us. At our camps we have 5 screened in platforms (16 x 16) with
electric/water – and also primitive camping sites. There is a large pavilion, and restrooms.
Right now we are not charging fees for these camps. Campers can only access these by river or hiking
in – we do not allow anyone to drive in (with some exceptions for ADA).
The typical work week would require no more than 20 hours of actual physical
work. The Camp Host off the clock presence on site is preferred as a deterrent to mischief makers. Days off
are flexible. We do expect our hosts to work weekends that is our busy time. Weekdays can be on
the slow side (with the exception of spring break J ). We do not mind if you need to take ‘time off’
(more than 12 hrs outside of camp) we just need notice so we can have coverage for the camp. We have no
problem with you leaving the camp during the week to run errands, etc
