Jordan Lake Campground Host Program

The campground host position is a volunteer position designed to assist campers by providing information on points of interest, location of services and facilities, maintaining facilities, and the host site in a clean manner, and assist in emergencies when permanent staff is not available. In general, the host will be a representative of the campground and park when they are assigned.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

During the prearranged length of stay, volunteers serve as a “live-in” host at a designated campsite. To insure maximum contact with a majority of the park’s campers, hosts will be required to work weekends, holidays, and weekday evening hours. Contact is made by occasionally patrolling the assigned campground and by being available at the host site. Other responsibilities and duties include:

  • Hosts will be available to answer visitor questions and explain the park’s regulations and policies. The host should become familiar with local points of interest and the locations of services and facilities that might be requested by the campers.
  • Hosts will need to be available up to 5 days per week and especially on holidays and weekends.
  • Hosts will not enforce rules and regulations, however, hosts will provide minimum security against vandalism and other unlawful activities by their presence and their ability to contact local law enforcement and commissioned rangers when necessary. Hosts will be the park’s extra eyes and ears to discern potential problems.
  • Hosts must display a willingness to deal with campground users in a cheerful and helpful manner.
  • Hosts should present a neat, pleasing appearance at all times and be courteous in their interaction with park visitors. Hosts should set an example by being “model” campers by maintaining a clean and approachable campsite and by observing all park regulations and policies. Hosts will not be  permitted to build, install, or add structures other than normal camping equipment on their site unless prior approval is obtained from the ranger in charge of the area, the park superintendent and the camp host coordinator.
  • Hosts will be responsible for “light cleaning” of restroom facilities in their area and ensure that supplies are stocked as needed. The facilities should be checked several times a day.
  • The hosts are allowed to stay at the site free of charge. They may have overnight guests as long as the occupancy number does not exceed the permitted number. (i.e., one RV and one tent inside the timbers.)
  • Fires should be in fire pits, where they exist.
  • All applicants for the host position will submit applications to the park volunteer coordinator. The decision to utilize a host will be made by the ranger in charge, his/her supervisor, and the volunteer coordinator. Applicants are selected based on their related work or volunteer experience.
  • The host will report to the ranger in charge or other designated staff members in his or her absence. All volunteer hours must be submitted to the volunteer coordinator in order to get credit.
  • Hosts are not authorized to allow campers in or out of the campground before or after posted park hours unless there is an emergency situation that requires such an action. The host may allow campers out when the host is entering or leaving outside of the normal operating hours.
  • Each host will be evaluated by the ranger in charge to ensure compliance with park regulations and host policies. Violations of the park regulations and/or host policies may result in termination of their stay.
  • The length of stay as a host may be limited to one month in any camping area.
  • A camp host trailer may not be stored on park property during the off-season or when the individual is not an active host.
  • If a host decides to camp but not in the capacity of host, they can camp in any open camping area and use their free camping memorandum or pay the regular camping fee. Two weeks free camping voucher/letter will be given annually by the end of the current calendar year if volunteer hours are met and submitted.
  • A host cannot be employed in a seasonal position in the area they are assigned to host. (i.e. you may not work as a seasonal employee in the same campground you are hosting in.)
  • Once the area or loop a camp host is hosting in closes for the season, the host will not be permitted to move/host in other areas open for the winter season.
  • A campground host must be over 21 and have an RV or enclosed camping trailer.
