Bayou Segnette State Park Camping and Recreational Opportunities
The Bayou Segnette state park, located near the tip of Lake Cataouatche in southern Louisiana, is only a
thirty-minute drive from New Orleans. It is near three other state parks and several historical sites and museums.
The Camping Club named Bayou Segnette state park one of the Top 100 Family Campgrounds of 2008.
Two different types of wetlands meet in the Bayou Segnette State Park—marsh and swamp. The creation of canals in
the area turned much of the swampland into marshland. Saltwater coming in from the Gulf of Mexico helped
create the marsh and the result is an incredible habitat for plants and animals. Alligators, armadillos,
opossum, raccoon and mink are a few of the animals that can be found in the Bayou Segnette. Hawks,
blackbirds, Mississippi kites and bald eagles are some of the birds that can be seen in the park.
The Bayou Segnette park offers visitors the opportunity for many different recreational activities. As
with most other state parks in Louisiana, Bayou Segnette offers boating, fishing and canoeing. Fresh and
saltwater fishing are available due to the parks location. Salt water coming up the canals to the Gulf of
Mexico brings salt water to the park. Bass, catfish, bream, perch, redfish and trout are common in this area,
so there’s always something to cook over the campfire. The boat launch offers the opportunity to explore parts of
the park that are not accessible by land. Canoeing into the heart of the marsh allows for a taste of nature
that would seem only to exist in the most remote areas of the state.
Entry into the park is extremely reasonable at $1 per person and seniors and toddlers free. There are many
campsites with water and electrical hookups for the RV camper, tent camping, a group camping area and 20 waterfront
cabins with screened porches.
The wave pool is a hit among the younger campers, as are the playgrounds found in many of the picnic areas.
Wildlife lectures aimed at younger campers are presented by the park employees. Guided canoe tours are available
for the park visitor not quite ready to strike out on his or her own.
While daytime temperatures can reach the 90’s during the summer, winter temperatures only reach the 60’s, so
snowbirds will want to put Louisiana’s Bayou Segnette state park on their itinerary. For the hardier campers
summertime offers a virtual smorgasbord of flora and fauna.
