Butterfield RV Resort in Benson, Arizona is currently looking for someone who enjoys the stars and is outgoing, to fill the following position:

Astronomy (Astro Nerd)

Butterfield RV Resort is the only private RV Park in the U.S. that has a 16 inch university grade Meade telescope & top quality observatory. Currently we are looking for an astronomer to stay year round and run the observatory shows.
The astronomer would work at night and the show(s) last for about an hour. In the winter season we have two Astro-nerds, and if we have a full house for the first show (18 seats), we do a second show, if there is participation. So between the 30 or so minutes you need to show up early to open up, the possibly 2 shows and the 15 minutes to close after, you could conceivably work 3 hours per night, 4 nights on and 4 nights off in the winter season. In the summer the hours will vary as the weather permits and only on good days. In the beginning you will invest some time creating your opening and closing “spiel” and learning a few facts about the objects you are viewing. Most nights there will only be one show, so about 2 hours work.

I know what you’re thinking.”But, I’m not an astronomer!” This job is mostly about entertainment. We aren’t running a classroom and most people aren’t going to remember one out of ten things you tell them. It’s being able to relay information in an interesting and fun way. Good communication skills are a must. We have a complete library of objects you can use. The biggest challenge would be learning to use the telescope, which isn’t hard. It’s fully automated and we can teach anyone the basics of it in 15 minutes.
