Lake Houston Wilderness Park In The City of Houston Is Looking for Camp Hosts Starting April In Texas

Lake Houston Wilderness Park

Spend April-October close to Houston in Lake Houston Wilderness Park (the only City of Houston park that allows overnight camping!)
Lake Houston Wilderness Park (LHWP) is currently seeking camp hosts to live on site in this beautiful, lushly forested expanse of nearly 5,000 acres. Even though it is not directly on Lake Houston, the park is surrounded by Peach Creek and the San Jacinto River.
The park is located four miles east of New Caney (approximately 30 miles north of Houston- with NASA, Kemah, Galveston is only about 2 hours away, the museum district and more!) off Hwy-59. Lake Houston Wilderness Park is the only park in the department’s inventory that allows overnight camping. This is not an RV park; only camp hosts can park RVs on the property.

Although there is no hunting allowed in the park, there are plenty of other things to do. It offers a variety of outdoor learning experiences for people of all ages including camping, hiking, trail running, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, birding, fishing, and horseback riding (visitors must bring own bikes, fishing equipment, watercraft, and horses). Most of the park is heavily forested with beautiful trails which provide a perfect setting for photography, nature study, bird watching, and relaxing.

The position is a part-time volunteer position assisting with essential end of day and after hours’ functions related to guest safety, security, maintenance, or other duties along those lines.
Other duties may include but aren’t limited to custodial and backup cashiering. In exchange for these work duties the Camp Host will be given a campsite with full hookups, washer and dryer nearby, and use of some of the facilities.

Opportunities for Site Hosts to assist in public education, resource management, visitor services, and maintenance of gardens and trails is available during unscheduled volunteer hours.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure all park visitors are following park regulations
  • Make sure all guests have left the park at closing
  • Check/restock supplies at center bathrooms
  • Check overnight tags
  • Answer inquiries from park guests after hours and provide security.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed depending on the skills and experience of the applicant
